Stéphane Bouquet was a French writer, screenwriter and film critic, born in Paris on 31 October 1967 and died in Paris on 24 August 2025.

After studying cultural economics and sociology, Stéphane Bouquet devoted himself to writing as a poet, critic and screenwriter. He is the author of Nos Amériques, Un Peuple, Le Mot Frère, Un Monde existe, Dans l’année de cet âge, published by Champ Vallon.

He co-hosted the programme Studio Danse on France Culture with Laurent Goumarre and was a literary critic for Libération and a contributor to Le Monde.

He translates American poetry and has written several books on cinema, including Clint fucking Eastwood, Beate with Claire Denis, Gus Van Sant, S.M. Eisenstein, and Il Vangelo secondo Matteo, a study of a film by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

He is the author of screenplays, notably for directors Sébastien Lifschitz, Patric Chiha, Yann Dedet, and Valérie Mréjen. He is also a playwright and performer of choreographic pieces, among others with Mathilde Monnier. He has served as director of the ‘Dance and Cinema’ educational programme at the Ecole de Danse Contemporaine du Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier, E.xe.r.ce.

Stéphane Bouquet was a resident at the Villa Medici (Rome) in 2003-2004.
