Gurumbé. Canciones de tu memoria negra

From 28 to 29 January 2026

Gurumbé explores the little-known history of African populations enslaved in Spain between the 15th and 19th centuries. Through archives, interviews, and anthropological analysis, the film highlights how this repressed heritage shaped Andalusian culture and flamenco. The rhythms, movements, and music convey a physical and intangible memory passed down through time.

Broadcast in partnership with the Théâtre de Liège for the 2026 edition of the Pays de Danses Festival.

Today Europe’s southern borders are shielded with barbed wire and fences, but once a trade flourished here
that forcibly kidnapped thousands of african men and women into exile and exploitation. Giving voice to its
Afro Andalusian memories, Gurumbé leads us to question Spanish identity, reminding us that Africa is
weaved into its fabric.
