During a voodoo sacrifice ceremony in honor of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder, a white rooster is sacrificed; the play refers here to the human sacrifices that have survived in the Caribbean islands. The boy who kills the rooster is suddenly possessed by Damballa, the serpent god. The priest protects him with incantations and wards off evil from the community. Shango is the African god of lightning and justice and is very present in the Afro-Caribbean culture that Katherine Dunham studied in Haiti, Cuba, Trinidad, and Jamaica.
