Simon, non je ne m'appelle pas Samuel ETO'O
During a trip to Yaoundé, I asked the question: “Who is the most famous person in Cameroon?” The answer was clear… Samuel Eto’o, the famous soccer player who played for Milan, Madrid, and Chelsea, and who won four Ballon d’Or awards in Africa. How can an entire people identify with a jersey, a brand, a logo? What constitutes the deep identity of a people and an individual within a nation? Why should there be no other prospects for emancipation in Cameroon than soccer? On the set, the work explores the dimensions of light and shadow. It delves into the transformation of image through the manipulation of the jersey and ventures into the notion of false identity. The strong man, the warrior, the victor deconstructs his public image.
